Allison Shand's Running 13.1!

For those of you who know me, you won't be surprised to learn that I'm participating in yet another Team in Training event, and raising funds to fight blood cancers. You will however, be surprised to learn that I'm RUNNING it!

I'll be serving as Running Mentor for the Rock 'n Roll 1/2 Marathon (13.1 miles) in Virginia Beach on September 5, 2004.

I'll be running in honor of Terry & Paul Matuschewitz, by mom and step-dad who both died due to complications from Hodgkins and leukemia. I'm also running in honor of past Honored Teammate for Disney and now good friend, Kristin Rooney. She's a 29 year old non-Hodgins lymphoma survivor.

I've set a personal goal to fundraise $2000. Once I reach and surpass that goal, I will have raised approximately $12,000 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society by participating in 4 events! And I don't plan on stopping there...

The Society's mission is to find cures for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease, and myeloma - and to improve the quality of life for patients and their families. Here are some surprising facts and figures...

* An estimated 670,950 Americans currently have blood cancers.

* Every 5 minutes someone in the U.S. learns they have leukemia, lymphoma or myeloma. That's nearly 300 people every day.

* Every 9 minutes another child or adult dies from a blood cancer.

But research and treatment efforts are paying off!

* 30 years ago, there was no effective treatment for leukemia. Thanks in part to funds raised by people like me, the survival rate for the most common form of childhood leukemia (ALL) has improved from 4% in 1960 to 85% today!

* The 5 year survival rate for leukemia has tripled in the past 40 years, from 14% to 46.3%!
